The litter box with its lid flipped up and open, the steel pan visible inside, a scoop clipped to one end and a tabby cat reaching a paw into the litter.
The three parts separated: the bare stainless steel pan on its own, the pan with the grey plastic rim fitted, and the whole thing with the hood on top.
A tabby cat sitting inside the box looking out through the front opening, with litter covering the floor of the pan.
These are the supplier’s photographs, cut out and placed on our own background. Every one of their originals had sales copy printed across it, including an odour claim we will not repeat, so we lifted the product out and left the writing behind. The product pixels are untouched: nothing has been smoothed, recoloured or redrawn. We have not had this one in our hands.

The part that holds the mess is steel.

The thing the title gets wrong

It is not a stainless steel litter box.

The supplier sells this as a “fully enclosed stainless steel cat litter box”. Read their own description and it says, in their words, the stainless steel litter pan. The steel is the pan. The hood over it, the lid and the door are plastic.

That is worth buying anyway, because the pan is the part that holds wet litter for years and the part you scrape a scoop across twice a day. Plastic in that job gets scratched, and scratches are where smell settles in. The hood never touches any of it.

But we are not going to print their title. The middle photograph above is the pan on its own, so you can see exactly which part is which before you decide.

The bare steel pan, the pan with its plastic rim, and the assembled box with the hood on.

Measured rows, and the ones they left blank.

The supplier printed the dimensions onto the photograph in both centimetres and inches, which is more than most of them manage. Where they said nothing, the row says so.

What it is not

Four reasons not to buy this.

If one of these is a dealbreaker, we would rather you found out here than after the box arrives.

It does not make litter smell go away.

The supplier says odourless and locks odours inside. We are not repeating either. A hood holds smell in a smaller volume, which is pleasant when the lid is down and worse at the moment you open it. Steel does not absorb odour the way scratched plastic does, and that is a real difference, but nothing here replaces scooping daily.

Most of what you see is plastic.

The pan is steel. The hood, the lid and the door are not. If you came looking for an all metal box because you want no plastic in the house at all, this is not that, and the ones that are cost roughly thirty dollars more.

A hood is a box a cat has to agree to.

Cats generally prefer a tray that is large, open and easy to leave. Most adapt to a hood without fuss and some never do, and the ones that do not tell you by going somewhere else. The hood lifts off and the steel pan works alone, so try it open first if yours is nervous.

It is 23.6 inches long.

That is a big object to stand in a small bathroom, and it is the measurement people get wrong. Put a tape on the floor before you order rather than after.

Fifty nine dollars, and the pan outlives the hood.
