These are the supplier’s photographs. The first is their product shot with their background swapped for ours. The other two are theirs as taken. We left out the one with the safety callouts printed across it, because we are not making those claims. We have not had this one in our hands.

What it is actually made of

An aluminium frame around a plywood deck.

The listing calls it an aluminium ramp and the specification field says aluminium. Their own photograph says more: aluminium frame, carpet, EPE foam, plywood, 600D Oxford fabric. So the frame is metal and the deck you walk on is plywood with foam and carpet over it.

That is how it weighs 20.3 pounds instead of the 35 a solid metal ramp of this length would, and it is why it is stiff rather than springy underfoot. It also means it is a thing to keep dry. We would rather you knew which part is which before it arrives than read the word aluminium and picture a metal plank.

The supplier's specification card, listing gross weight 21.8 lb, net weight 20.3 lb, and material as aluminium frame, carpet, EPE, plywood and 600D Oxford fabric.
Ramp or steps

We sell both. Here is which one to buy.

They do the same job and only one of them belongs in your car. Buying the wrong one is the most likely way to waste money on this page, so this is the honest version rather than the one that sells two.

Buy The Ramp if the dog is long, heavy or stiff.

A ramp is a continuous slope, so a dog never has to lift its own weight onto a step. At 71 inches it reaches a high boot at a shallower angle than a short ramp does. It suits dachshunds and other long backs, big dogs whose weight you cannot lift, and old dogs who have started hesitating at the car. It is the one to pick if the dog is reluctant rather than unable.

Buy The Steps if space is the problem.

Steps take up a quarter of the floor a ramp does and weigh half as much. Most dogs take to steps immediately because climbing is a familiar movement, where a ramp can feel strange underfoot at first. If your car is parked tight, if you will carry it in and out often, or if the dog is small and confident, the steps are the better object and fourteen dollars more.

What it is not

Four reasons not to buy this.

If one of these is a dealbreaker, we would rather you found out here than after a 21 pound box arrives.

It is not a treatment for anything.

The supplier says the surface relieves pressure on paws and joints and reduces muscle ache. We are not repeating that, because we cannot show it. What is simply true is mechanical: a dog that walks up a slope is not jumping down onto a hard surface. If your dog is in pain, the thing it needs is a vet, and this is at best something that helps afterwards.

It will not stop a dog slipping.

Their copy says the surface ensures your pet will not slip in any weather. Nothing ensures that. It is a carpet-faced deck with rubber feet, which is good grip and not a guarantee, and a wet ramp at a steep angle is still a wet ramp at a steep angle.

It weighs 20.3 pounds.

Folded it is a 19.5 by 19.3 by 6 inch block, which stands neatly beside a cupboard but is a real lift in and out of a boot every day. If you will be moving it twice a day rather than leaving it in the car, weigh that honestly before ordering.

Two hundred and fifty pounds is the ceiling.

That is the supplier's rating and we have not tested it. It covers every dog we can think of, but it is a limit, and it is not an invitation to walk up it yourself alongside a nervous one.

This supplier documents better than most: assembled and folded sizes, both weights, and a full material breakdown. Where they are silent, the row says so.
