A dalmatian standing outdoors in a close fitting grey wrap that covers the chest and back.
A small chihuahua sitting and wearing the same grey wrap, showing how it fits a very small dog.
Both photographs are the supplier’s. They are the only two images on their listing without sales text printed across them, which is why there are two here rather than three. We have not had this one in our hands and we have not staged a photograph of our own.

What we will and will not say

We are not going to promise you a calm dog.

Compression wraps are meant to work the way a swaddle is meant to work, by holding steady gentle pressure against the body. Plenty of owners are certain it helps their dog. The published research is thin and it is mixed, and some of what is quoted at you in this category comes from the brand selling the garment.

So here is our position. This is a well made stretch vest at a fair price. It may help your dog settle. It is not a medicine, it is not a treatment, and it will not fix a dog who is genuinely suffering. If storms or fireworks leave your dog panicking, injuring itself or unable to recover for hours, that is a conversation with a vet, and a vest is not a substitute for it.

You will not find a success rate percentage anywhere on this page. We did not run a trial and we are not going to borrow somebody else’s number.

Sizing, by the dog’s weight
XXSUnder 8.8 lb, under 4 kg
XS8.8 to 13.2 lb, 4 to 6 kg
S15.4 to 24.3 lb, 7 to 11 kg
M26.5 to 39.7 lb, 12 to 18 kg
L41.9 to 63.9 lb, 19 to 29 kg
XL66 to 110 lb, 30 to 50 kg
XXLOver 110 lb, over 50 kg
The gapsRead that table again and you will see it skips. Nothing is offered for 6 to 7 kg, 11 to 12, 18 to 19 or 29 to 30. That is the supplier’s chart, not a typing error of ours. If your dog lands in a gap, size up, and email us first if you would rather we checked

Including a contradiction we cannot resolve.

The supplier’s own listing names the fabric twice and gives two different answers. Both are printed here.

The Calm Wrap · compression vest
FabricTheir listing says "brocade cotton ponte-de-roma" in one field and "Main Material: Polyester" in another. Those are not the same cloth. Ponte de roma is usually a blend and often contains polyester, so both can be partly true, but we cannot give you a fibre percentage and we are not going to guess one
ColourHeather grey
ClosurePhotographed as a pull on garment with no visible fastening. The supplier does not describe a closure, so we cannot confirm whether there is an adjustment anywhere
ReflectiveA reflective strip at the neck, shown in the supplier’s detail photograph
SizesSeven, XXS to XXL, chosen by the dog’s weight. See the chart above, including its gaps
Girth measurementsThe chart is published by weight only. There is no chest girth figure, which is the measurement that actually decides whether a compression garment fits
WashingNot stated. It is a stretch knit, so we would wash it cold and dry it flat, but that is our advice and not the maker’s instruction

What it is not

Four reasons not to buy this.

If one of these is a dealbreaker, we would rather you found out here than after the box arrives.

It might do nothing at all.

The evidence for compression wraps is thin and mixed. Some dogs settle in one and some are completely unmoved. We have no way of telling you in advance which yours is, and anybody who claims they can is selling harder than we are.

The size chart has holes in it.

Four weight bands are simply missing, and there is no girth measurement anywhere, which is the number that matters most for something that works by fitting closely. A deep chested dog at the top of a band may well need the next size up.

We do not know exactly what it is made of.

Two fabric descriptions on one listing that do not agree. We have asked. Until we get a straight answer, you are buying a grey stretch knit of unconfirmed composition, and if that matters for allergies it should stop you.

It is the wrong tool for real distress.

A dog that hurts itself, cannot be settled for hours, or is getting worse year on year needs a vet and very possibly medication. Buying a thirty two dollar vest instead of making that appointment is the one way this purchase could actively cost your dog something.

Thirty two dollars, and an honest maybe.
